Ion Grigorescu is one of the most well-known romanian artists, exhibited all around the world. His life under Ceausescu's communism was a continuous exploration of the self. One of his photo artworks stuck with me since, a simple portrait of him with a wire tied around his neck. A device that chokes, that immediately shows the outside impressing the inside, while at the same time placing the subject in that paradigm portrayed as resilience through anguish. What better way to tie all of his painted work. A rough cardboard 'notebook' showing rough expressions, his painted work often using metal, wood, cardboard, rugged canvas and burned materials.
